Since the discovery of insulin in 1921 by Banting and Best, much has changed in the way insulin is made. This is a review of the clinical significance of these changes.

The insulins in use are derived from either animal pancreas, or produced by genetic engineering methods. Bovine insulin which was till a few decades ago the most commonly used insulin has been largely replaced by porcine or human insulin.

The booklet also deals with:
- different types of insulins,
- purification of insulins and its clinical significance,
- insulin dose, resistance, allergy, lipoatrophy,
- various aspects of diabetic pregnancy and vascular atrophy and also mentions the brands of purified insulins available in India.
