Diabetes & Infections
Dr. Anil Kapur, Dr. N.S. Moorthy

Persons with diabetes mellitus have a higher incidence of infections. These infections are often complicated and result in greater morbidity and mortality than anticipated in otherwise healthy individuals. The increased susceptibility to infection conferred by diabetes is multi-factorial. The general effect of chronic hyperglycemia and its consequence, probably has an over-riding importance. Additionally there may be immune disturbances.

This booklet deals with :

  • Risk of infections – Role of Chronic Hyperglycemia
  • Metabolic effects of infection -
  • Infections and diabetes - Infections strongly associated with diabetes
  • Infections caused by therapeutic intervention
  • Infections possibly related to diabetes
  • Management of tuberculosis in persons with diabetes
  • Infections of soft tissues and bone
  • Viral infections
  • General care of the diabetic patient with regard to infection and immunisation
