Role of insulin in Type II diabetes

Dr Anil Kapur

Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (NIDDM) or Type II diabetes constitutes nearly 95-97% of all diabetic patients in most population groups. The successful management of Type II diabetes revolves around an individually tailored nutritional plan, exercise regimen, use of oral agents and/or insulin. Regular monitoring by patient and physician and supportive education are an integral part of management .

As a consequence of a more vigorous approach to monitoring and therapy particularly in the younger non-obese Type II diabetics, limitations of nutritional management, exercise regimens and oral agents are being increasingly brought to light and more Type II patients are being advised insulin therapy. The aim of this booklet is to bring this usage in the proper perspective and must not be viewed as an attempt to brush aside the value of diet control, exercise and oral agents in management of these patients. It is important to reiterate again that all these therapeutic modalities have an important role to play and must be given their due importance.
