Screening for G.D.M

Indications for Screening for G.D.M

Procedure

Performed at 24 – 28 weeks
Any time of day, irrespective of food
Ingest 50 grams of glucose and do blood glucose after one hour
Value above 140 mg% indicates the need for a 100 gm 3 hours OGTT (Oral Glucose Tolerance Test)

Diagnostic Criteria For G. D. M.

Three hours O. G. T. T. Procedure

Over night fasting of 8 – 10 hours
Do fasting blood glucose
Ingest 100 grams of Glucose with water
Perform blood glucose every hour for 3 hours
Patient should sit quietly during the test
As per O’sullivan & Mahan (Modified by Carpenter & Coustan) if any two or more of the four results exceed the cut-off values the test is positive for G. D. M.
If one abnormal value is seen, it is recommended that the test be repeated one month later.
