| Harness The Newest Ally Against Diabetes: Relaxation |
| Take a deep breath. Let your muscles go limp. A small study of 18 people with diabetes suggests that simple relaxation exercises such as these can reduce blood sugar levels by 9 to 12 percent. |
| But relaxation techniques may be most effective as allies for blood-sugar control if you’re already tuned in to your state of mind. They didn’t appear to help those who were depressed or anxious. Here’s what you can do. |
Relax and reflect in solitude. Sharpen self-awareness and practice relaxation with regular time alone. Start with a minute or two of deep breathing, then spend 10 to 15 minutes progressively relaxing your body. Start with your feet, and work your way up. Tell yourself that the muscles in each body part are heavy, warm, and loose. |
Practice prevention. Reduce bouts of anxiety by avoiding stimulants such as caffeine, maintaining a healthy diet, and exercising regularly. Spend time with friends who boost your spirits. |
Target your triggers. Facing a situation that’s gotten you worked up or made you feel down in the past? Give yourself something positive to focus on by planning, in advance, an activity, outing, or project that you know short-circuits depression or anxiety. |
| Know when to seek professional help |
| If feelings of depression and anxiety intensity are prolonged, a talk with a counselor could be in order. |
