Reasons For Being Overweight

It's a question over 1 crore urban Indians are asking. That's how many of us are overweight. There are many factors that encourage our bodies to build up unhealthy quantities of fat.

Try and work out which of the following factors could be giving you a weight problem.

  • Inheriting your parents weight problems - If one or both of your parents have been overweight, you may have a genetic predisposition to put on weight easily.
  • Overeating - We ear too much for many reasions. Eating is enjoyable, comforting and sociable.
  • Fatty foods - Often we choose fatty foods because they're cheaper, tastier or more easily available from the take-away.

  • Not being physically active - Although modern technology and labour-saving devices have taken a lot of the hard physical work out of life, they've also denied us opportunities for being active. Nowadays you need to make time to go for a walk, whereas once it was the only way to get around.

  • Too many diets - Have you struggled with your weight for a long time, losing weight through dieting then gaining it again? "Yo-yo" dieting can make it harder (on mind and body) to reduce and maintain a lower body weight.
  • Under stress - Unpleasent emotional experiences can turn eating into a way of comforting yourself. You keep eating even when you're no longer hungry, because it makes you feel good.
  • Other factors - Some medications can cause weight gain as can some medical conditions like depression and certain diabetic problems. It's important that you talk to your doctor if you think these are affecting your weight.
