Breast Cancer Patients
May Have Subtle Hypothyroidism, Even In The Absence Of Overt Or Subclinical Hypothyroidism,
A New Study Suggests.
Measuring
Serum Calcitonin in Patients With Thyroid Nodules Detects Medullary Thyroid Cancer
Thyroid
nodules are fairly common and, for the most part, are benign, but finding the
ones that are not can be tricky. European studies have shown that routine measurement
of serum calcitonin in patients with thyroid nodules can detect cases of unsuspected
medullary thyroid cancer (MTC), leading to improved outcomes.
Relationship
Of Thyroid Stimulating Hormone With Coronary Atherosclerosis In Angina Patients
Although
the high level of serum TSH is associated with multi-vessel disease, it was not
the determinant of coronary artery disease in patients with normal range of thyroid
function.
Carotid
Artery Intima Media Thickness Is Inversely Related To Serum Free Thyroxine In
Euthyroid Subjects
In euthyroid subjects, intima media thickness is associated
with FT4, after controlling for clinical factors, lipid levels and thyroid autoantibodies.
These findings raise the possibility that, even within the euthyroid range, low
normal thyroid function may adversely affect cardiovascular risk.
Subclinical
Hypothyroidism Is A Risk Factor For Nephropathy And Cardiovascular Diseases In
Type 2 Diabetic Patients
Type 2 diabetic patients with subclinical hypothyroidism
are associated with an increased risk of nephropathy and cardiovascular events,
but not with retinopathy. Our data suggest that the higher cardiovascular events
in subclinical hypothyroidism with Type 2 diabetes may be mediated with nephropathy.
